Halloween Craziness: Non-Native Couple Playing Indian Asked to Leave Idaho Restaurant for Disruptive Behavior - Indigenous New England

This article is just an example of white people in the "United States" just not getting it. Unfortunately, there are many examples.

Sometimes, people forget that "Native Americans" still exist and are alive and well, and certainly not only living in reservations.

Here is another example of how Cultural Genocide is still alive and well.

Yesterday, while at a routine Dr. Appt, I was asked my ethnicity. "Native American, sometimes it's categorized as 'American Indian'" I responded to the Nurse.

The nurse looked at me confused.

"So Hispanic/Latino?" She responded.

"No, Native American." I reiterated.

"Ok. So I'll just put 'white' since you don't look black" Was her answer.

"I am Native American, it is very different from white." I insisted.

She then rolled her eyes, marked the 'white' box, and we went on with the appointment.

I have learned that in certain situations, you just kind of let things go. Getting in an argument with the Nurse who will be caring for me and my unborn child is not a smart move.

I simply waited for the Dr. to come in, and I told her that the nurse made a "mistake" and that she had "accidentally" marked me as white when in fact I am Native American.

"Oh, that is very different" the Dr. responded. Then she changed it for me.

Cultural Genocide is still alive and well, and people dressing up as "Indians" is just one of the ways they show, that they just don't get it.

Please, if you are the descendant of the Colonizers in the country you are living in (or even if you came after the original colonizers just because you liked it there), be respectful of the people who were originally there.

A simple acknowledgement is all it takes. Genocide has happened in many places, but true genocide is difficult, many of us are still here, we just dress like you and live in similar homes. Our brown skin is not a sign of "tanning better" and is not always "the mediterranean tan that Italians have" sometimes.
