You probably watched the anime or read the anime about the war on marinefold and how it was stopped by one of the yonkous, shank. Upon hos appearance seemed he had a clash with Kaido but came un-scratched, think shank is invincible or that strong to go head to head against kaido?
Also we saw teach aka blackbeard saying he was not strong enough to face him yet, just are OP is shank 😎

Maybe it was their armies who fought not themselves, also I'm pretty sure I heard that Shanks fought Kaido so they won't interfere with the Whitebeard vs Marines war.
