Facebook to ban white nationalism and separatism

Facebook has said it will block "praise, support and representation of white nationalism and separatism" on Facebook and Instagram from next week. ... The social media giant also pledged to improve its ability to identify and block material from terrorist groups. ... Facebook users searching for offending terms will be directed to a charity which combats far-right extremism.

Call it a guess, but this won’t end well for FaceBook. Their centralized algorithms will likely be a clumsy response.

At least some of these white nationalists may migrate to the Steem blockchain, so be ready to flag them. @whatsup recently did a post about the importance of using your stake for flagging, go read it:

Also, NPR’s “Fresh Air” recently had a show about how extremists use social media for recruiting. It’s well worth a listen:

@preparedwombat didn’t Steem have a go- round with something like this a few months ago? I never heard anymore and I can’t remember the account name, maybe they were flagged down and left????

Doesn’t ring a bell, guess I missed it.

About a year ago I, along with a few others, got involved in a flag war with a couple of overtly racist accounts. They eventually stopped posting but may have migrated to other alt accounts I’m not aware of.

It’s a good idea to take a look at the New page once in a while, might find them there.

I’ll snoop a bit..... I have also run into accounts that have almost 0% VP very little SP and are 100% down voting ten times a day!🙃. I think they must be looking for a reaction 🤔

hey, @preparedwombat.

I agree that it will be interesting to see how this actually plays out. Social media and Facebook in particular have not done very well when it comes to differentiating extremism or hate groups with those that aren't either but don't necessarily follow convention or a specific party line.

I think STEEM is uniquely set to handle such things, but banning it outright seems like they'll just find somewhere else to go where it's easier to lose sight of what they're attempting to do. I suppose shutting down recruiting is one thing, but not knowing what they're saying could be an issue, too.

Always an interesting battle when it comes to free speech and public safety.
