Germany, the world’s fourth biggest consumer of coal, aims to shut down all 84 of its coal-burning plants that produce 40% of the country’s electricity within the next 19 years in order to meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change, a government commission said Saturday.
And yet America’s current administration wants to expand use of coal in Back to the Nineteenth Century style. It’s hard to see how jobs might be created in an industry facing falling demand, rising automation that’s cutting jobs rather than adding them, and stiff competition from natural gas and renewables.
