We’ve all heard the saying that the path to success isn’t a straight line. What does it really look like? 10 thousand unsexy steps.
I heard someone say this once years ago and it has always stuck with me! I like this phrase better because it takes a nebulous idea and breaks it down into the fact that every little step you take towards you goal matters. Even if it’s not pretty, even if it’s a total disaster – you always learn something from that experience. This takes you to the next unsexy step that propels you forward.
Hot Mess Alert
I decided to take my next “unsexy step” today and try something different. Instead of just filming in my home studio… I decided to try “walking and vlogging”. I used my gimbal to stabilize the footage, hand held my microphone and went off. Even though I thought I had centered myself in the shot… I literally ended up cutting my head off in most of the video. Not to mention I look like a total dork holding my microphone, I decided to walk up a big hill and sound super out of breath, AND all my neighbors are staring at me like I’m crazy.
But I’m posting this anyway. It would have been so easy for me to walk home, and film this content in the comfort of my studio. So why didn’t I do that? Because this is MY unsexy step and I thought documenting the process was important! I’d like to figure out how to start vlogging outdoors more often now that summer is coming. I definitely learned a lot about using my gimbal and the next time I decide to walk and vlog – I’ll have a better frame for the video and I’ll know to avoid huge hills!

Ok, here’s my challenge to all of you! What is your next unsexy step towards your goal? If you have started to get comfortable – then maybe it’s time to shake things up and try something new. I’ve gotten really comfortable filming in my home studio and so now I’m pushing myself to do more by getting outdoors and trying something different. If you feel comfortable sharing – I’d love to hear from you in the comments! If not, just think about it for yourself and then make it happen.

I love this philosophy. It is easy to get focused on the highs of creating a new project (feeling inspired, having big break throughs) but ultimately it takes a lot of consistent effort to pull off something great. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
