Will you join us today to hear what is new on Steem in April 2018 during the Witness Forum on MSP Waves Radio at http://mspwaves.com/ because we begin with a thirty minute presentation from the Content Director at Steemit Inc followed by witnesses reviewing many of our top opportunities and challenges on the Steem blockchain? For getting an inside look at what we are doing here and how some of us working on Steem full time are thinking, we think you will really enjoy this!

New to Steem?

The main idea we are sharing on Steem is that OUR VOICE HAS VALUE especially when we share our stories, photos, videos, and live streams. Instead of sharing on other social media websites and blogs where we help companies become rich and get spammed with ads in return for our contribution, on Steem we each have a chance to decide what posts are most valuable and participate every day in building the Steem blockchain. What is a Witness?

The short version is that witnesses on Steem are the block producers within our Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS). In DPOS we vote on witnesses with our stake instead of wasting huge amounts of energy and computing power with Proof of Work mining like on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. To learn more, will you read https://steemit.com/steemit/@gmichelbkk/what-is-a-steem-witness-how-to-vote-and-why because our votes for witnesses determine our future together here on Steem?

Who Participated?

Want to get to know the participants of this live radio show from http://mspwaves.com/ by @minnowsupport? Here are the profiles of everyone that participated alongside me!

@aggroed hosted the show and presents his recording at https://steemit.com/witness/@aggroed/steem-witness-forum-recording-4-28-18 while providing each of us that participated with permission to record our own version of the show and upload it as I have done!

@andrarchy is the Content Director for Steemit Inc which owns https://steem.io/ where we get an overview of the Steem blockchain and https://steemit.com the top user interface for Steem.

@lukstokes is a top witness for Steem with a focus on engaging with the community and is the founder of https://www.foxy.io/

@roelandp is a top witness for Steem most well known for organizing Steemfest as seen at https://steemfest.com/.

@followbtcnews is a top witness for Steem mostly recently having launched launched https://steemtipper.com which allows us to share tips with any user on Twitter in Steem alongside his existing service with https://steemit.chat.

@pharesim is a top witness for Steem as seen at http://pharesim.me/.

@yabapmatt is a backup witness for Steem and the creator of https://steembottracker.com/

What were some of my favorite parts of the show?

@andrarchy said at some point in the first 30 minutes or so that "Smart Media Tokens are almost ready" which I was very excited to hear because we have been hearing about them for months now and are ready for release!

At around 12 minutes, @andrarchy points out that our blockchain on most days processes more transactions than all the others combined as seen at http://www.blocktivity.info/.

At around 18 minutes, @andrarchy talks about user retention and improving the sign up process along with how Steemit Inc. sees the role in developing Steem.

After hearing all the witnesses share our passions and opinions on opportunities and challenges on Steem, what leaves me feeling good is the commitment we all have for helping build community on Steem.

At around 32 minutes, @andrarchy discusses the intention to have Steem be a unifying identity with many applications on the blockchain like @dlive without steemit.com being the primary focus.

Witnesses begin introductions and discussion around 36 minutes leaving me with a warm and fuzzy feeling at the end where we are all committed to serving and growing Steem together!

Point of Clarification: Active Users!

After listening to the discussion about "active users" we need to look more carefully at what we mean when we say "active users on Steem" because the current numbers I heard in this discussion (and I have been using myself prior to realizing this) do not accurately reflect our true number of active users. We need to most accurately communicate our number of active users to help anyone interested in Steem understand the data.

ACTIVE USERS Definition: The term "active users" in digital marketing is intended to include EVERYONE USING a website or application. This means both SIGNED IN users AND users BROWSING which are signed out on any platform.

How do we calculate ACTIVE USERS?

Let us consider YouTube for a minute. The number of active users will include all viewers on every video on every application from youtube.com, mobile applications, and embedded videos on every website. That total for any one day is the number of active users. If YouTube only included users liking videos or otherwise actively engaging on YouTube, the number of active users reported would only represent a fraction of the total.

Therefore, the number of USERS TRANSACTING on Steem is NOT EQUAL to the number of ACTIVE USERS! Many of us, including me, have been grossly under reporting our number of active users on Steem by referencing numbers that only reflect accounts TRANSACTING on the blockchain on a daily or weekly basis.

Users transacting on Steem does not include all of the users reading posts but not making any transactions including users signed out, users not liking or commenting on a post, users browsing feeds on mobile apps, users watching videos on applications like @dlive, and anything else where a transaction is not taking place.

Number of Active Users on Steem Daily =

  1. Every account transacting on the Steem blockchain plus
  2. Every unique page view on steemit.com, dlive.io, steem.io, dlive.io, d.tube, dsound.audio, fundition.io, steemdb.com, steemd.com, and any other website using the steem blockchain plus
  3. Every unique user buying or selling Steem or SBD on any exchange plus
  4. Every unique interaction with a mobile application or Steem wallet.

To get the accurate number of ACTIVE USERS DAILY for Steem, we will need all of the data for this aggregated by unique users to eliminate any duplicates because these numbers combined represent the total number of people actively using the Steem blockchain every day by loading an interface which pulls data from Steem. I estimate the true number of active users when we consider all of the data is ten to twenty times what we report especially after seeing data suggesting steemit.com gets 500,000 to 1,000,000+ views a day.

True Number of Daily Active Steem Users = ~500,000

When we understand the importance of including everyone pulling data from the Steem blockchain or using an interface which does, we get the true picture of daily activity on Steem which includes the small fraction of total users transacting and the majority that interact with Steem and do not make any transactions.

Thank you very much for reading about and watching this live radio show from MSP Waves radio at http://mspwaves.com/ which we hope was useful for you in getting excited about and maintaining hope for a beautiful future together on Steem!

Love,

Jerry Banfield

@palmerjm1 you're on the @abusereports naughty list!
If you do not stop, your account will be rendered invisible on Steemit. Bad Steemian! Bad!

Hey @jerrybanfield, do you have any pointers for how to get around the Dtube IFPS error, I am getting it every upload attempt :(

Clear cache and sign in again?

Unfortunately that didnt work :( I tried a different computer and a different browser as well.

Wow! 500,000 daily active user on steemit! This is amazing, am bless, am on the right platform...
Thanks jerry for sharing

This is my estimate based on the 60,000 users a day making transactions and the steemit.com traffic reports I have seen. Steemit Inc is capable of giving us a more accurate report of these numbers!

Any site where we could get all kind of data on Steemit?
