Compositional Process
The music was written on paper first. Doing it in 4-hour candlestick increments. I decided to make the melody from the sbd report, have a solo section and finish it with the melody. This is because in many forms of music, there's a bookended use of the melody. Jazz does this with melodies too, so I figured I would do some funky hybrid.
I recorded the chords first using my guitar sort of doing a little percussive thing. Then after that, I layered a light 808 bass over it. Layering is key in this type of music as it's an additive process at first.
The melody was recorded in parts, the A melody and A2 melodies were recorded in two different instances to leave a gap in the middle for whatever improvisation would take place.
The guitar might sound weirder in this one, that is because I have done a weird signal chain for it sending it through two stages of guitar distortion. The first stage is very light, and almost sounds in moments like digital peaking, and the second one has a guitar pedal that's very heavy. This gives almost a distorted image sort of the bokeh effect in photography. Like there are two different distances it's coming from. On top of that, it's being run as a send through a EMT-140 Plate Reverb.
Once I input the guitar lead, I brought in a 70bpm Hip-Hop Beat. The beat was 70bpm, but the track was 75bpm. I had to time stretch to get it to fit just right. Then looped it till the end.
Session
This one I took a little easier than normal. I didn't mix it quite as much as normal. I took this as an opportunity to just let the mix sit as is. Experimental.
Video Session
For those who don't know, this is what the video sessions look like for me. I've never shared one, but it gives a little idea of how simple the videos actually are to edit.
I automate the position and scale of the slider to move the bar with the music. Usually, a start and end point are sufficient.
Thanks for checking out this week's post! Can't believe it's been 9 weeks.
That was fun. Are you playing your instruments live?

@thegalavangirl The guitars are live. The 808 bass I played in with a keyboard.
