The Aceh Tsunami Museum was originally to be in the form of a large ship and was intended only as a storage of all documentation related to the natural disaster of December 26, 2004. Sebelum pembangunan dimulai panitia menyelenggarakan lomba design museum dengan Thema "Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Tsunami Museum (NAD-TM)", lomba yang ditutup tanggal 5 Agustus 2007 berhadiah Total Rp 275 juta dengan rincian pemenang I mendapatkan Rp 100 juta,ke II Rp 75 juta,ke III Rp 50 juta dan sisanya Rp 50 juta akan dibagikan sebagai penghargaan partisipasi kepada 5 design inovatif @ Rp 10 juta.
