Hey, whatta ya know, a beam of shining light within the Democratic Party!
The DNC, in its summer meeting today, voted to allow super delegates to vote only after the first ballot. This is a good start to many much-needed reforms for the party.
The question now becomes: Will main media, like it inordinately did in 2016 and unlike it ever did before, routinely report the endorsement of super delegate votes and carry that tally forward?
In 2016, the Hillary Clinton main media connections were so strong the super delegate votes were added into her column, thus helping to create an image of invincibility, and reducing the power and influence of the votes actually won by candidates from each of the respective primaries and caucuses.
To those of us who were critical of the 2016 Democratic Primary, the manner in which the media behaved, regarding the super delegates, seemed very much a part of "the fix" that effectively helped to rig the nomination for Clinton (see Wikileaks).
Therefore, should the DNC also have a rule whereby a super delegate can not publicly declare their important and weighty influential vote before the time they make that vote? Perhaps there should be an option: 1) Become a super delegate and not declare an endorsement; or 2) Endorse a candidate and not become a super delegate. Anyway, food for thought!
Another important DNC step, among others, would be for the Democratic Party to investigate its behavior during the 2016 election, with a key focus of concentrating on voter suppression and fairness for each official candidate. The party imperatively needs to prove it is of, for and by the people.
We still need more light and transparency at the end of the tunnel!
