German Shepherd

The German Shepherd, this dog was very fashionable a few years ago but has experienced a decline in popularity following several cases of aggression reported by the media, as can be seen today with the dogs categorized. However, this herding dog is no less a faithful, courageous and intelligent companion. Moreover, his tendency to the guard will not have to be valorized in his education and it will be necessary to socialize it a maximum in order to have a dog balanced and well in his paws.  

The tail hair of the German Shepherd is slightly longer. Its size as for it must reach the hocks. She is carried down, she is strong and well stocked with hair. From the moment the dog is in action or excited, the tail is right. Life expectancy: about 11 years.  

Even today, this dog breed is used in the Gendarmerie or for other first aid interventions. Even if nowadays it is the Malinois which is more used, the German Shepherd is nonetheless a dog that requires a significant activity. Moreover, like the vast majority of Berger’s dogs, this breed of dog will need an activity that allows him to think and concentrate. He preferred by far a tracking activity to everlasting ball games that have no purpose.  

This dog, you will understand, will take time to get out, to walk but also to occupy it as it should. Finally, the German Shepherd is often appreciated for its qualities of guard. Regarding this point, it is important to never reinforce its guardian side but on the contrary to emphasize a successful socialization. In the same logic, it is not a dog made to stay behind a portal all day and even less attached to a chain in the garden to keep the house. It is a dog who needs to participate in family life and who will ask for an important activity.  

Size (height at the withers) : between 60 and 65 cm for males and between 55 and 60 cm for females . 

Weight: between 30 and 40 kg for males and between 22 and 32 kg for females. 

Color: mainly black and fire, the German Shepherd can also be black and brown and there are also gray German Shepherds. Slight white spots are accepted in the standard of the breed but are not particularly appreciated. On the other hand, the truffle must be obligatorily black.  

Body: it is elongated, supple, powerful and well-muscled. The members are well plumb and muscular. 

Hair: The German Shepherd has a short, double coat, but there are also German Shepherds with a medium or long coat.

Hair Care: Weekly brushing is recommended. In times of mounting, that is to say twice a year, a greater brushing will have to be put in place. 

Head: the head of the German Shepherd must be balanced, it must not be too long or too wide. The skull is slightly curved and the stop slightly accentuated. 

Eyes: preferably dark. The eyes are medium in size, almond shaped. 

Ears: they are medium in size, broad at the base, straight and pointed. 

Apartment living: possible.   

Possible activities: herd activities, let's not forget that the German Shepherd is a sheepdog before being the guardian of the house. Dog sports, tracking, first aid, etc. are also activities that can be considered without problem. It is also possible to go cycling, jogging, etc. or other with a German Shepherd. However, be careful to wait until the end of its growth before setting up an intense physical activity because this breed of dog is very sensitive to dysplasia and joint problems.  Like all dogs, the German Shepherd can live in apartment but in any case, it will take out every day to walk. A German Shepherd in an apartment is not unhappy if it is spent enough.  

Compatibility with children: possible.

Note: Accustomed young and above all educated to avoid the behaviors of extreme excitement, the German Shepherd can cohabit with children.
