We have interviewed one dog trainer in Syracuse and he was happy to share these simple tips that will make training any puppy or dog easier and faster. Adhere to these simple tips while training to be sure to correct any dog behavior issues:
Congratulate the dog for every command he follows and trick he does. It is also important to give rewards. Only give rewards when the dog has followed the command. This teaches the dog to associate the reward with obeying the command. If the dog is rewarded for incorrect behavior they will associate the reward with the incorrect behavior.
Giving special food or treats is a common form of reward. I discourage it because it can interfere with the dog's normal eating habits. Some good alternatives are lots of praise and affection or a special toy.
Avoid giving commands when you do not have reward with you. This is not fair to the dog.
When training new tricks and behavior it's normal for the dog to make mistakes. Remember that training can be stressful for the dog try to avoid anything that might be considered harsh or cruel. Dogs are our best friends and we want them to know we love them.
Be consistent with commands try to use the same word or gesture for the command each time.
Use the same word to correct the dog every time, if he does something wrong say "no" in a firm clear voice. When he does something right like completing an instruction then say "Good Boy."
Everyone involved with the training process should use the same gestures and commands. These help the dog learn faster and keep its confusion at a minimum.
When training a new command it is important to limit the training to only one new command. For example if training "Sit." Do not start working on stay until sit is learned.
If possible begin training as early as possible. Younger dogs and puppies learn faster than older dogs. It is still possible to train older dogs it just takes a more time.
Whenever interacting with the dog, watch for signs of progress. If the dog learned one command easily and seems to be having trouble with another it might be a physical problem. A quick trip to the vets can help to determine that.
