Research in England also reveals that women suffer more attacks than men.
The reasons why a dog can bite a human being are very varied. But could there be any reason why some people might be more prone to it than others? It seems so, according to the results of a study carried out in Great Britain by the University of Liverpool's Department of Epidemiology and Population Health.
The researchers interviewed about 1,000 people who had been bitten once by a dog, and subjected to several personality tests. And the results showed several interesting facts. For example, at least statistically, the cases of women assaulted by dogs were twice that of men. and that most of the time they were produced by dogs that were unknown to the victims.
But the most revealing fact is that people who showed an anxious personality or greater emotional instability were the highest percentage among the victims of dog attacks. Of course, further research is needed on this finding, but the results suggest that there may be a basis for believing that dogs may be more likely to attack people who show signs of anxiety, although the motive is unknown.
The research also showed that the average number of people bitten by dogs in Britain could be 1,800 per 100,000, compared to 700 per 100,000 so far.
