The breed of dog or domestic dog that originated in colder climates has only the topcoat and is made up of a coarse guard hair and a soft down hair, or "single." On their breast or bottom, certain breeds may occasionally exhibit a white "blaze", "stripe," or "star" of fur. Premature graying can start as early as the first year of life in dogs, and it is linked to impulsive actions, anxiety-related actions, a dread of loudness, and a fear of strange persons or animals.
Dog tails can be straight, straight up, sickle-shaped, curled, or corkscrew-shaped. Like many canids, a dog's tail serves as a key means of expression for their emotions, which is important for interacting with other people. Some hunting dogs have traditionally had their tails docked to prevent harm.
Health
Some dog breeds are more prone to particular genetic conditions such cleft palates, trick knees, blindness, deafness, pulmonic stenosis, and elbow and hip dysplasia. Pyometra, which affects unspayed females of all breeds and ages, and Gastric dilatation volvulus, which affects larger breeds or deep-chested dogs, are two severe medical diseases that have a substantial impact on dogs. These two acute illnesses both have a short lifespan. Dogs can contract parasites including fleas, ticks, mites, hookworms, tapeworms, roundworms, and heartworms, a type of roundworm that dwells in dogs' hearts.
Dogs should not consume a number of human foods and household items, including xylitol, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and chocolate solids, which might poison them with theobromine, thiosulphate, sulfoxide, or disulfide. Tobacco's nicotine can be harmful to dogs as well. Large amounts of vomiting or diarrhea could be indicators of ingesting. Additional signs include stomach pain, lack of coordination, collapsing, or passing away.
The same diseases that affect humans, such as diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy, cancer, hypothyroidism, and arthritis, can also affect dogs.
Lifespan
The average lifespan of dogs varies significantly between breeds, although for the majority, it falls between 10 and 13 years. When all breeds are averaged, mixed-breed dogs have a median lifespan that is at least one or more years longer than purebred dogs. Increased body weight has been found to have a negative correlation with life expectancy in dogs in England, while mixed-breed dogs live an additional 1.2 years on average than purebred dogs.
