The Cane Corso from Italian cane and "corso" from the Latin "Cohors" meaning "Protector", also known as the Italian Mastiff, is a large Italian dog breed, for many years were highly valued in Italy as a companion, guard dog, and hunter.
It is a well muscled dog that can weigh anywhere between 99 to 150 pounds with a height of nearly 28 inches at the shoulder. The breed is known as a true and quite possibly the last of the coursing Mastiffs and is a descendant of the Canis Pugnax, which were dogs used by the ancient Romans in warfare.
This breed was also developed to guard property and hunt big game such as wild boar. It is athletic and powerful and is best suited for an experienced owner who has a large, enclosed property.
These dogs are smart, trainable, and noble of bearing; assertive and confident. Corsi are great family protectors. They are eager to please, versatile, and docile and intensely loyal with their masters. They are fine with children and other pets with good supervision.
