I try to not be ethnocentric when I encounter these situations and yes, I realize that not all cultures view dogs as cherished pets the way that I do, but when you see abject cruelty towards animals it is hard to not feel a bit of anger or even that if that is their culture, then I think that culture is wrong.
Meet "Max." This little fella is just as friendly as can be and super cute to boot. Now, when you look at Max do you want to
A) Have him roll over so you can give him belly-rubs?
B) Call him a good boy and play games such as fetch with him?
C) Brutally attack him with a machete, injuring his head, back, and mouth and then leave him for dead on the side of the road?
I think only the worst people on the planet would opt for option "C" and unfortunately that is exactly what ended up happening. We were able to intervene before Max died thankfully and after operations, wound cleansing and a few weeks of rehab he was back to his usual energetic self. It did take a bit of time for him to re-acclimate towards humans, and I think that a machete attack that nearly ends your life is a very good reason for Max to have been a little stand offish towards humans at the start. After weeks of love and good boy rubs, he finally realized that humans are not bad and now he trusts us.
Max is just a pup and has lots of energy and thankfully he seems to have totally forgotten about that horrid day where someone, for some reason, felt compelled to nearly kill him with what is basically a sword.
Thankfully, Max's wonderful and charming attitude earned him a forever home pretty rapidly in the U.K., at the moment it is just a question of time about how and when we are going to be able to get him there. There are no flights from Thailand to the U.K. right now and cargo flights do not allow the shipment of pets unaccompanied by a passenger.
Max at the moment is living under the protection and care of our sister operation, Lanta Animal Welfare over on Koh Lanta.
They are currently searching for a foster family so he can get a bit more acclimatized to being in a family environment before he gets shipped off to his new home in England.
On a side note Lanta Animal Welfare is more of our "inspiration" than they are a sister shop and they have been instrumental in helping us to learn the ropes in our joint pursuit to ease the suffering of the animals of Thailand. They too are struggling during the Covid times as many of the homeless population depended on the scraps from restaurants and markets for survival.
Max's story is just one of many of the stories of neglect and abuse that happen in this part of the world but through the efforts of Lanta Animal Welfare and to a much smaller degree our own, the Krabi / Lanta region is a little bit better for our furry friends.

I had no idea the animals that are saved get rehoused around the world. This is a sad story with a happy ending and people who do this sort of thing are just the worst possible kind.
