after multiple chemo treatments female stray is now cancer free

in dogs •  last year

When we brought this dog in it was merely for a standard vaccination and parasite prevention. We were unhappy to discover that she had TVT (a type of K9 cancer) and while it is a simple procedure - far more simple than with humans - it is normally a long road and is difficult to treat with animals that don't always stay in the same place. One treatment of chemo is normally a waste of time and with dogs that live on the street it can prove difficult to find them a second (or 3rd) time for their treatment.

We were lucky with this one though because she has a wonderful demeanor and was always very happy to see us. The local community that she lives in, although still without a permanent home, commented that she is very friendly to everyone and is well-fed by all of the people in the neighborhood. She is basically a community animal and they all do their part to make sure she is alright. It is forgivable that they would not be providing medicine because unfortunately that just isn't part of the Thai culture when it comes to stray dogs.

We were concerned that we wouldn't be able to find her for the repeated treatments but thankfully our worries were unwarranted. She doesn't seem to go very far from a small few block area and by simply driving around we could always find her lying in the shade somewhere and as soon as she spotted us approaching, her tail would start wagging. Thankfully she was also very easy to handle and to put into the crates for transport to and from the veterinarian.

With such a great attitude and friendly nature, I am surprised that no one has taken her on full time. Again, this is just kind of part of Thai culture. I find it strange that people wouldn't want to look after an animal better but I am not going to judge another country just because I was raised somewhere else. We are all just celebratory that after her last treatment we brought her in and the vet has stated that she is now completely cancer free.

So now we are taking her back to the neighborhood that she calls home and are leaving our cards with some of the people that live there and asking them to call us if there is ever any other problems with her, or any other dogs that might live in the neighborhood. Although we do wish they would do a lot more than they do, these watchful eyes in those areas make our job considerably easier and more productive.

We are absolutely delighted that this doggo, who doesn't have a name as far as we can tell, is going to be alright.
