Another mass sterilization project is underway with partners

Our main objective as an animal-welfare charity is to sterilize as many stray animals as possible. We find that this is the most humane was to keep the stray animal population from getting out of control. As I have pointed out in the past the government doesn't have much of anything to do with animal control in Thailand and if they do need a solution to the problem it normally involves a mass culling (killing) of any stray population. Sure, their way is quicker but organizations like our own want to try to show that there is a solution that doesn't involve ending the lives of these animals but rather, preventing their populations from spiraling out of control through mass multiplication of their numbers. It takes longer, but it is a lot more "nice."

We are now doing another mass project with the objective being to sterilize all the dogs in an entire region and we have teamed up with Lanta Animal Welfare, a much larger and more well-established organization than our own, in our quest to accomplish this goal.

Making this happen isn't terribly complicated because before we go into an area with this objective in mind, we have already done our homework and figured out where the stray packs are living and do what we can to make the local dog and human population familiar with us. Then we also let the neighborhoods know that we are not there to steal the dogs, we are there to help with a problem. At this point a lot of them will join in and help us to get the dogs into crates because many of the neighbors are already a lot more familiar with the local dogs than we could possibly be, and this makes getting the females into crates and transporting them to the veterinarian a lot easier.

Many of the dogs that we pick up are quite young and other females have clearly had pups at least once, probably more. While we cannot be sure that we have gotten all of the females, we do our best to make sure that we do. If there are some stragglers that are hiding when we come along, we tend to keep an eye on the area and ask the people who live there to also help us in this endeavor. Many of them are more than happy to help out and this will become a crucial part of our operation down the line when we simply cannot be there all the time. People tend to notice new puppies running around their streets and if this happens we need to go in and investigate as well as sterilize any newcomers. Pups are normally willing and capable of having their own litters after just a mere year of being alive, so if these new additions are not handled quickly, the area will soon find itself in the same situation it was in before since these packs tend to increase in size until they reach critical mass and the area cannot sustain any more dogs.

In this particular project the idea was to sterilize 70 dogs that we noticed during our recon missions and we are already 46 dogs into the process. These events are totally driven by donations and later we hope that the changes that our efforts make to the community will have a lasting impact.

The idea behind all of this isn't to just help the dogs but to also have the community see that projects like ours actually CAN have a lasting impact on the stray-dog population problem that exists all around Thailand.

We start small, and eventually hope to branch out enough that our tree will cover all of Krabi. It is a slow moving process but we have already seen fantastic progress in the few years that we have done this. It takes time!
