While I love it every single time that a person adopts a pet from an animal sanctuary anywhere in the world including and especially Krabi Animal Welfare, I am also a little bit afraid when people who have never had a pet before are the ones that are doing it.
Pets are fantastic experiences to have in your life. They are my and many other people's pride and joy and love of their lives. These wonderful experiences do not come without their downsides though and a lot of people aren't prepared for what the possible side-effects of having a pet actually are.

Dogs chew up stuff. That's what they would do in the wild and that is what they are going to do in your living room unless you train them not to. Even if you do train them not to there are certain things like separation anxiety that can lead them to doing it even if they know they are not supposed to. Cats are going to claw at furniture... again, this is what they do in the wild and they are going to do it in your living room as well.
Both types of animals seem to have an affinity to chewing on your most important charging cable until it is broken as well.

It's easy for us to look at the images and videos online of the dogs appearing to feel very guilty about what they have done and laugh but it becomes very frustrating because sofas, pillows, chargers, phones, chair legs, and the other things that animals can and will destroy in your absence are expensive.
Both animals also don't really put my time or thought into where they are going to relieve themselves again, unless trained to do so. I think that most dogs would prefer to do their business outside, but if you don't train them to do that, they are going to go wherever, whenever nature calls. It was many years ago but I was actually doing a quick run into a store to get none other than dog food and treats and my dog which was waiting in the air conditioned car decided this was a good time to poo poo on the driver's side of the car. This was a Labrador too, not a Chihuahua so it was quite the mess.
As a potential new pet owner, you absolutely must be prepared for the fact that these things are not only likely, but basically guaranteed especially if you are adopting a puppy. There are no dogs out there that don't feel the need to chew on stuff or poop on the floor when they need to do so. This behavioral change can take years to accomplish and many people, when seeing how well-behaved a friend's dog or cat is, get the very untrue perception that all dogs are like that right out of the box.
Owning a pet is a lot of work and you need to have the amount of spare time necessary to do that sort of work.
Far too many times people adopt animals and then either return them, or do the worst possible thing and simply abandon them somewhere else again. The first thing is annoying, the 2nd thing is worse than never adopting them in the first place. It causes a great deal of confusion for the animal and in many cases makes them completely lose trust in humans.
Our shelter, like many others around the world, offers the opportunity for people to foster animals for a short period of time like 2 weeks or a month. The sneaky idea behind this is that we hope that the foster parents are going to fall in love with the animal and then want to take them on full-time. It also gives us a trial period to see if the potential new owners are up to the task of actually doing what it takes to raise a dog or cat.
It isn't as easy as they make it look on TV. It isn't a gift for another person. It is a 15-year commitment which will require a tremendous amount of your time and dedication and it needs to be taken very seriously.
