Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi is where we focus most of our attention in our charity work in Thailand. The dogs there which number over 100 have come to know and appreciate us and we do our best to make sure that they are all happy, healthy, and well fed. We have gotten to know most of the dogs there and outside of a few outliers, they are very happy to see us and even know the sound of our truck engine and we are greeted by dozens of happy faces when we arrive with health check ups disguised as treat distribution.
During some of these visits we spice things up a bit by putting on some Christmas headgear for photos.
As most dog owners will tell you. Dogs don't generally like having things put on their heads so we limit this to just a few moments. They don't seem to mind and their reward for amusing us is plenty of biscuits and belly rubs.
This trio are a funny bunch as they always seem to travel together. Even though all the dogs at the temple get along with one another for the most part, these 3 seem to be best buds according to the monks that live there. They are always with one another and when one moves, the other 2 follow.
Wearing a hat for a moment is a small price to pay for these chewy treats. Some of the other dogs seriously shied away when we even got the headdress near them so since it is not at all our intention to traumatize the animals we only put it on the ones that seem keen to do whatever it takes to get a snack. Just don't tell them that we would give the snacks to them anyway even if they didn't do it.
To me it is kind of funny the way that the other dogs in this group are very inquisitive as to why I am picking up their friend but word of warning to anyone out there and this might seem intuitive to most people but you shouldn't try picking up dogs that you do not know. I have years of experience with these very dogs and know their individual behaviors. It is a very bad idea to try to handle dogs that are you are not familiar with so if you see a dog on the street it is always best to just keep your distance. Feed them if you can but for the most part, even at this temple, the dogs tend to be a bit stand-offish when it comes to handling them. Even dogs that seem friendly can turn on you very quickly if they feel threatened and sometimes tiny things can set them off.
