Heartbreaking short story: "From an Abandoned Dog"

in dogs •  8 days ago

This is obviously a work of fiction because in order for it to be true it would have to have been written by a very intelligent doggo that is capable of writing in English. Despite that, I would imagine that this is how most abandoned dogs feel for a time and I can say this with more certainty than most people because I spend a lot of time with dogs that have been abandoned. When I am around they are full of life, but I have also been around dogs that were abandoned and they just stare outside for hours and hours with no interest in playing or doing anything at all really. In severe cases we have to trick them in order to get them to eat. Dogs have a very strong attachment to their owners and for an owner to just run away on them, is one of the worst things a person can do.

I've seen quite a few videos that people post online when they catch someone abandoning their dog on the side of the road and it is just so damn tragic when that dog chases the car with all their might until they are completely exhausted and can go no further. While that do might inconvenience your life, it might destroy things, it is almost certainly going to relieve itself in places that you would prefer it didn't, that animal still completely depends on you for care and doesn't know what to do without you.

We've hear the story of Hachi and also that very tragic sequence in Futurama that had me asking the showrunners "why would you do that to us?"

I've worked with these abandoned dogs for many years and if someone out there thinks that this dog is just going to wander around a bit and then forget who you are or where it lived a few days later you are dead wrong. These dogs go through such intense depression when their world all of a sudden completely changes for the worse. Their safety and comfort that was provided for them is suddenly gone and they don't know how to fend for themselves. To make matters worse the various packs around Thailand and I presume the world, don't take kindly to strangers and will often bully them or viciously attack them just for seeking a bit of comfort and companionship.

Organizations like our own can only do so much. We have limited space and funds and our kennels, which we try to keep as clean and comfortable as possible, have been over capacity for years. The same is true for nearly every single animal welfare organization that I have ever heard of anywhere in the world.

If you take on a pet and later find out that you are ill-equipped to handle this situation you really need to do the right thing and at least TRY to find someone else to look after the animal. It may surprise you how many country people there are that are happy to have a dog with a nice demeanor that is already been raised a bit. Of course you need to vet these people a bit because not just everyone is going to treat the dog well. If you made a mistake by ever getting a pet dog, then just admit it and reach out for help. There are tons of people out there that are ready to take on this responsibility if you are unable to do it. But for the love of everything holy, please please please do NOT just drop the dog off somewhere and hope for the best. Imagine if the same was done to you ok?

If you are in the Krabi region and need some help with precisely this sort of situation please reach out to us at one of the contact points at our website.
