Although we are operating on a shoestring budget, it is impossible for us to stand by and ignore something that will become a problem. There is an area that we visit regularly and we noticed a mother with some pups and everyone was new to us (the animals that is.)
So thanks to a kind and rather large donation recently, we actually had the funds necessary to pick them up and treat them all. I have the feeling that these dogs are actually new to the area and it is an area that we frequently monitor because it does seem to be a rather popular dog "dumping ground."
The pups were nearly the size of their mother, which happens a lot faster than you might think. I don't know the exact timeline but it is not a long period of time before the children reach adult size. It varies from breed to breed, but some dogs will reach full adult size in as little a six months.
Not that any of this matters though, because we were of course going to pick them up anyway.
The whole lot of them were very easy to approach and didn't try o get away from us at all. I think the dog treats we had with us played at least a part of the process of getting them into the kennels, but they were amicable the entire time: Perhaps because we kept mum with them at all times as well except for obviously, during the operations.
There was one unfortunate discovery during all of this and it was news that we really didn't need to receive at this particular point in our financial state: The pups and mum will no longer be contributing to the stray dog population but it was discovered that mama has cancer and we are not ones to walk away from this. Dog's get over cancer the same way that humans do, if they get over it at all and that is chemotherapy or in this specific case TVT is the treatment they get and I'm not a vet so I am not going to pretend to understand what that means.
Thankfully, cancer treatment for dogs is a lot cheaper than it is for humans but it still isn't free, so we are hoping that some fundraising will be fruitful in the coming months since it appears as though tourism isn't going to come back any time soon.
While it is tragic I suppose we can try to put a little bit of a silver lining on this cloud: If we hadn't found them mama would have certainly died and perhaps her pups would have been very confused about what to do next. So even though it is tragic, it could have been more-so if we hadn't found them.
