A lot of people don't understand how far money actually goes in helping organizations like ours. We are kind of in a unique position because we are in a cheaper part of the world and this would not be true in a more expensive countries but many people are alarmed when we inform them about how far less than $20 goes in helping homeless and hungry dogs.
I sometimes don't believe it myself when I try to think about how expensive everything is in the west.
That gigantic bag of dog food, which certainly isn't some sort of luxury brand, costs 550 Thai Baht, which is about $17. This goes a really long ways with our many temple dogs and the monks and in particular the nuns, are very happy to help out with.
It's endearing and a bit funny how excited the dogs get when they hear the sound of the bag of food being opened and they come running from all around to get their daily meal. The nuns tend to mix the food with leftover rice as well and while I have no idea if this is actually good for dogs or not, they don't seem to mind at all and the objective is simply to get food into their hungry bellies anyway.
The nuns are more familiar with the individual dogs than we are since they live here and when they are doling out the daily rations they ensure that there is no fighting among the dogs who are very obedient and loving towards them. Everyone gets as much as they want and this is great to see because the dogs living on the outside of these walls do not get to experience this luxury of sorts.
I feel as though dogs have some sort of an internal alarm clock because they seem to know when feeding time is getting near despite the fact that they don't have much of a concept of time. This is one of those great mysteries about the internal intelligence of dogs that after many years of working with hundreds of dogs, I rarely see an exception. They just seem to know when certain things are about to happen.
All of the dogs at the Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi are well looked after or at least, a lot better looked after than the ones who live totally off the grid. We are working to help all of them that we can.
Let this be a bit of an indication to anyone out there that a little bit of money goes a really long way - especially when it is mixed with leftover rice! You don't have to millionaire to make a difference.
I realize that most of you are too far away to contribute directly to us and that is fine. However, I strongly encourage you to seek out an animal-welfare or animal-rescue organization near you because all of them need as much help as they can get in order to help the helpless dogs and cats the world over.
