US Dollar Almost Rp 14.000, Agus Marto: No Need to Worry

Jakarta - The United States dollar exchange rate (US) recently continued to strengthen. Against the rupiah, the US dollar exchange rate almost broke the level of Rp 14,000, or more precisely at Rp 13,965 this afternoon.

The Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Agus Martowardojo said the institute will continue to monitor the movement of the rupiah against the US dollar. He also asked not to worry about the movement of the rupiah exchange rate.

"We at BI keep watch over it, and we will discuss this also in the RDG meeting (governor's meeting), May 16-17 So that's what we say, but what I want to explain is not to worry BI is in the market always," he said at the Complex BI, Central Jakarta, Thursday

Volatility or changes in the US dollar exchange rate continues to show strength, Agus assessed due to improving US economic conditions.

"We know there's a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, and in the FOMC it's about the US economy, and our American economy is in good shape, employment improves so all markets react and that's influence to the world including the rupiah" explains Agus.

According to him, the pressure experienced by the rupiah due to the US dollar strengthened also experienced by other countries' currencies. In addition, Agus saw so far weakening or depreciation of the rupiah is still reasonable.

"If there is depreciation we consider it a natural thing but not only the nominal but also the percentage," he said.
