Week 2 (September 2018)

Welcome to Domains in the Wild. In this series I post images of domain names that I've spotted out and about in the real world. Then I write a bit about what I think of each one. It's easy to miss domain names, but they're all around us and play a key role in a companies branding, messaging and design. Spotting them and taking a photo is sort of a fun hunting game to play while you're out and it takes very little effort once you start looking for them. Once you start to play, you will notice that you begin to notice them more without even trying.

If you catch any yourself, please share them with us all in the comments.

Without further delay, here are the domain names that I found in the wild recently...

The Domains

This week we're going to focus on one domain only but how it was used multiple times for advertising and as a design element. The domain is loschilangos.com. It's for a Seattle based food truck and catering company specializing in Authentic Mexican Cuisine, called Taqueria Los Chilangos.

A food truck is a business on wheels but should also be considered an advertisement on wheels. The truck itself has multiple sides that provide a blank canvas to advertise your business. Taqueria Los Chilangos does a great job of this with a well designed truck and they incorporated their domain name into that design as you'll see. This first image is simply the domain name from printed on the front of the truck, right above the windshield. This is a great place to put the domain. When you see the truck from the front your eyes naturally go to the domain name.

On the side of the truck behind the door they've added a design element that incorporates the domain name, a food truck icon and simple message, "We come to you." This is a great example of how a domain name can be used in advertising and play a part in design.

Lastly, we have the main side of the truck. This is the biggest canvas you have to work with on a food truck and as you can see Taqueria Los Chilangos took advantage of this space well. They use great colorful design elements to display their name, call out their service and end with contact information. Once again in the contact info section at the end they plug their domain name next to their phone number. It works well because the two compliment each other but don't look the same. The phone number is larger text and in yellow while the domain is white and framed with a dashed line. This separates the two and makes it easy to read both separately even though they're right next to each other. Great design and use of the domain name.

I didn't get a chance to check the back of the truck as it was backed up close to another truck and hard to get a photo but according to this tweet they do have the domain on the back as well.
