Week 20 (January 2019)

Welcome to Domains in the Wild. In this series I post images of domain names that I've spotted out and about in the real world. Then I write a bit about what I think of each one. It's easy to miss domain names, but they're all around us and play a key role in a companies branding, messaging and design. Spotting them and taking a photo is sort of a fun hunting game to play while you're out and it takes very little effort once you start looking for them. Once you start to play, you will start seeing domains everywhere without even trying.

If you catch any yourself, please share them with us all in the comments.

Without further delay, here are the domain names that I found in the wild recently...

The Domains

Posera.com

The first domain up is Posera.com. This domain belongs to hospitality software company, headquartered in London, Ontario. According to the company website,

Posera has been a leading provider of hospitality technology for more than 30 years. It manages merchant transactions with consumers and facilitates all aspects of the payment transaction.

I found this domain on their sign outside of their office in Northgate just north of Seattle.

The domain is pretty good considering it's not a word I recognize. It's good though because it's short, pronounceable, easy to remember, ends in .com and is an exact match of their company name.

VelocityPhysio.com

Next up is VelocityPhysio.com. This domain belongs to a small business in Wallingford offering personal and physical therapy services.

The domain is not an exact match of their business name as they go by Velocity Physiotherapy. I'm surprised they don't own that domain as well (VelocityPhysiotherapy.com) as it's an exact match and still available. I would guess that they thought it was too long but if that's the case, what do you think of your company name?

This domain is also quite difficult to spell and I imagine they find themselves having to explain or spell-out their domain all the time when telling people the domain. All in all, they could do better.

QueenAnnePainting.com

The last one for today is QueenAnnePainting.com. This domain belongs to a painting & carpentry contractor located in Seattle. From their domain and company name you would assume that they're located in the Queen Anne neighborhood, well you would be wrong. They are technically located in the neighboring neighborhood of Interbay.

This is a reason I often say that it's not always a good idea to name your business or domain name after your location, especially a focused location such as city or neighborhood. You may not always reside there or expand to other locations. Aside from that, the domain is okay. It's an exact match of their company name but although they offer carpentry services it's not obvious from their domain or company name.

Finally, I wanted to point out the photo here. The domain is a bit long at least to the point that at the size that they wanted it printed on their van it wasn't possible to fit it on the whole door. I like that they split at the www but unfortunately they didn't get the .com

Well, that concludes this edition of Domains in the Wild.

Good stuff @plaid. I love to think about you walking around town critiquing domain names you see on signs! :)

That is exactly what I do, I can't help myself! Haha! 😉
