Just reading a book about dopamine and fighting procrastination. So what is it about? When you watch a video on Youtube, or you are living in the expectancy of something good happening to you, like receiving a like on Facebook, or watching a cool joke on Youtube, or some other hype experiency, dopamine is created. The same might happen as you walk towards the cupboard to eat a chocolate or drink your favorite drink. All these activities create dopamine as an expectancy drug and it is easy to get hyped on it. And yes, that is connected to procrastination.
Because, when you sit down and think about the email you have got to write, not much dopamine is created, and as a result, it is easier to get on a dopamine ride in which you look for other activities that gives you a better experience. And as a result, you skip what you must do, and just go down the ride.
What can you do to help you with this? You might need a Dopamine Detox. It is about closing out all those dopamine triggers, making it harder for you to get on a dopamine ride, and instead, making it easier to do those tasks that don't exactly boost your dopamine levels. But, as your dopamine levels are down, even those tasks that might now seem hard and complicated, will be more satisfying to do, because they no longer compete with your Facebook timeline, or the coolest new videos from Youtube.
Do you get it? I am trying to get it, and it is very interesting. And in the same way, if we work with long perspective, it is easier to do those hard tasks, because we look further than the current dopamine hype, but see where we are headed instead!
