What is downvoting on steemit? and what happens when you get a downvote? (this article doesn't explain this, it asks)

So can anyone explain to me and anyone else who wants to know what a downvote is and what it does?
Is it the same as flagging someone?

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

  • Disagreement on rewards
  • Fraud or plagiarism
  • Hate speech or trolling
  • Miscategorized content or spam
