Do You Grow? Testing the High Tunnel in Overnight Temperatures

in doyougrow •  7 years ago

Hey there everyone! I have been having a problem with my internet since the last ice storm we had, and haven't been able to keep a connection long enough to post. It has been impossible to watch any videos by you guys and even hard to comment or upvote! Sucks, so I am calling to get it fixed tomorrow. I had enough time this morning before chores to keep trying, (it seems to work better when it is early) so here is a little update!

Some sexy Hot Paper Lantern Peppers

Last night was the first night leaving plants in the high tunnel, but not inside the "greenhouse inside the high tunnel" as I have outgrown that now. The temperature was -2° last night and I was up all night freaking out. I watched the temps on the thermometer drop from 27° to 5° and it was nerve wracking! I am getting up the courage to go out and check to see if I killed 1500 plants or not. Want to check with me?

It is 6:33am on Sunday morning and I've been up since 5am waiting to go check on things. I don't want to crack the door until it's above zero so I was waiting....but the suspense is killing me.

Frost on the ground!! It is pretty cold out here...

Holding my breath as we go in....things look ok!! Some plants on the pallet on the ground have moisture on the leaves, which worried me a bit. Sometimes means the leaf had frozen and is thawing, making beads of water appear on leaves. The leaves in that case will be wilted and feel thin, these feel good! I think it is just plain condensation.

This is a massive relief! The temperatures look amazing for the next 2 weeks, last night was the coldest it is going to get so my plants should be in the clear now!!! Today I will get the sides rolled up so some wind and bees get to the plants, I will do a video later and go somewhere else to upload it haha!!

I have to run, there are 150 sweet peppers that need planting up and tons of seeds to start today! I am leaving you with these pics of a greenhouse watering accident yesterday to show you it is always worth trying to save a dying plant. These eggplants were hidden and missed a few rounds of watering ~ they look pretty bad, even I thought maybe they had frozen and were gone for good.

Poor little eggplant babies

I filled the tray to the brim with water, said sorry to them and left them overnight to rest. This morning? All was good in the hood......

They're alive!!!!

Good as new. Water, an apology and darkness to rest is all they needed. Crazy, right??

I hope you have the best day😊

I am glad the high tunnel is working out for you. It is one of my to do items over the next few years.

It is a game changer for sure @canadianrenagade!! It has been really helpful, and a great learning experience!

You are such a good plant mommy! The way you take care of your little babies in such harsh conditions is amazing! Hope you get your internet fixed soon. I know how frustrating it can be to not be able to do what needs to be done.

Hopefully not harsh conditions soon! Fingers crossed spring stays this time:)
Ugh, it is so frusturating! It is out more than it is on, calling tomorrow to get help for it.

I am in Canada @sabbir1213! I think it is because of some previous bad weather we had. Where are you from?

I put our plantlings out in our greenhouse the day before yesterday. I was so worried! My eggplants look like yours, but they've been watered. I wonder if they just don't like the temperature. I haven't checked on them today yet.

It is stressful for sure lol! How are the eggplants looking today?

Much better! They just needed to adjust. Things are looking great in there today!

Horray!! I am glad to hear! Rock on little plants:)

They are looking fertelize and growing better. But some fading(poor) leaves. Maybe caused by cold weatherWeldon ms karen

Yes, some got cold and as well, I forgot to add calcium the RO water so they were nutrient deficient for a round of watering. Snapping back now!
