Could we fly if we had wings?

Greetings friends!

I love to see birds and bees flying. I sometimes envy them as they can see the world from above which is still beyond our reach, though we have progressed considerably in technological advancement and improvisation.

Birds can fly because they have wings. Insects can fly if they have wings.

So, my question is....

Could we fly if we had wings?

  • Yes.

  • No. Capacity of flying doesn't solely depend on availability of wings.

  • Can't say.

It looks the answer is a big no, unless the wings were enormous and the appropriately large enough shoulder muscles were attached to them. We have more mass than can be proportionately carried, so wings alone would not do it.

Birds and insects can get away with more proportionately sized wings because of their relatively small mass to size ratio.

There's probably much more to it, but the basic idea is, even if we had wings, we probably wouldn't get off the ground. :)

but I think it would depend on the weight.

That is true that the capacity of flying doesn't solely depend on availability of wings.
But there are flightless birds.
Having wings doesn't mean that you can (are able to) fly.
We can't say neither "yes" nor "no" to the "Could we fly if we had wings?" question.
I say maybe. Maybe we could fly. Maybe we just would have to learn it.
