Is Preventive Maintenance and Predictive maintenance the same thing?

I'm working on an assignment and I figured I'd throw the question out there to hear your opinion. What do you think?

  • Yes they are the same

  • No they are not the same

Preventative maintenance may be changing the oil in your car at certain intervals or checking the tire pressure. Predictive maintenance could be considered a subset of preventative maintenance. Under predictive maintenance there may be a part that fails on average every 125,000 miles, like a timing belt. This mean time between failure (MTBF) is used predict the failure so a replacement of the timing belt can be done as preventative maintenance every 100,000 miles.

That's a very technical way to put it. Thanks for the response

But off the bat I would say no since predictive sounds like a hassle, and I prefer normal fixit when it is broken.

Preventive is actually more tedious than predictive.
Predictive is just one stage of preventive from what I gathered from the responses

I vote for less tedious :)

I'll drink to that

No they are not the same. Preventative maintenance is warding off known issues, things that will happen in time. Predictive maintenance is warding off things that are unknown but could happen in the future.

My two cents lol

So it is fair to say that predictive maintenance is just a subset of preventive?

You're making my brain work extra hard this morning lol. My answer is yes/no :p
