Julian Assange: Did he do the right thing?
In my previous post I asked whether Wikileaks is good for the world and about the moral debate. The main question triggering that moral debate is based on the impact of Julian Assange's leaks. Technically Wikileaks may be more than just Julian Assange but if Julian Assange made certain decisions under his name then the question becomes did he make a mistake by releasing identification information in his leaks? Is the current sentiment on the matter that he did the right thing or is the sentiment that he made a reckless decision?
Feel free to answer this poll. Currently around 53% of the USA supports Julian Assange being extradited but it makes sense to ask the global Steem community to see where global sentiment falls on this matter.
One possibility is that he is perceived as a hero. In this possibility he did the right thing and his actions were moral.
A second possibility is that he is a traitor. In this possibility he maliciously set out to cause damage to US national security and did not care about the collateral damage.
A third possibility is he is a victim. Under this possibility he could have had the impression that he had no choice or may have been pressured.
- Julian Assange is a traitor
- Julian Assange is a hero
- Julian Assange is a victim
Answer the question at dpoll.xyz.
Assange cannot be a traitor as he is not American.

Okay, but my question relates to the morality of what he did rather than legality. Law is amoral and lawyers can figure that out. Morality is something all of us can have an opinion on.

As a thought experiment, if I had global monopoly of violence and sufficient capacity to deal with all the information, all evil acts would be brought to light. I would pay special attention to governments, corporations and criminal organizations. Vast new prison complexes would have to be constructed to house all the new inmates. The project would take years as universities would have to crank out large numbers of new graduates with law degrees to act as defense lawyers, prosecutors and judges.
When it comes what precisely Assange helped publish, there might be some ethical dilemmas when it comes to people being put into harms way because of that but I don't know the details of any of that.

Then I would suggest you edit your article and reword the fist point, he is an Australian citizen, and thus cannot be a traitor to the USA.
"Julian Assange's actions were morally questionable." is one suggestion for the rewording.

Are you aware that Australia is part of Five Eyes?

Five Eyes
The Five Eyes, often abbreviated as FVEY, is an anglophone intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These countries are parties to the multilateral UKUSA Agreement, a treaty for joint cooperation in signals intelligence. The origins of the FVEY can be traced back to the post–World War II period, when the Atlantic Charter was issued by the Allies to lay out their goals for a post-war world. During the course of the Cold War, the ECHELON surveillance system was initially developed by the FVEY to monitor the communications of the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, although it is now used to monitor billions of private communications worldwide. In the late 1990s, the existence of ECHELON was disclosed to the public, triggering a major debate in the European Parliament and, to a lesser extent, the United States Congress. As part of efforts in the ongoing War on Terror since 2001, the FVEY further expanded their surveillance capabilities, with much emphasis placed on monitoring the World Wide Web.

The United States Government has used every weapon in it's arsenal when it comes to smearing/attacking Julian Assange. To this very day there are armies of bots that swarm anybody that is highly visible in social media and who protest against the unlawful (under International Laws) apprehension and detention of Assange. The only people I see who are laughing and yucking it up over Assange are shitty people on TV who have been clearly co-opted by the ignorant lies spread by bad actors of the Deep State. If Julian Assange ends up in America by extradition, it's likely that he will be dead very quickly. This would be a very bad thing for the world in general due to the fact that Assange IS a publisher/journalist and it seems very clear that all that he is guilty of is sharing information with the general public that the Deep State did not want to be revealed. It is for that reason alone that he is being persecuted in this fashion... To serve as a warning to anybody who might want to follow in this trailblazer's path.

Can you cite the international law you are referring to? What international government actually enforces international law?
Also can you define "deep state"? I've seen these phrases appear many times in the past. The man, the powers that be, Illuminati, so what exactly is the deep state? Name them?

Also... under International Law, it's not lawful for Ecuador to let the British Government into their embassy to seize him... to work with them. Assange is entitled to refugee status. He was a refugee and he faces death by the United States if his extradition is allowed to occur... which is also illegal under Ecuador's own laws and British law.

The prophets of the Bible very rarely foresaw the future. More often than not, their message was one of forthtelling: the act of exposing sin, corruption, and malfeasance. As such, they weren't particularly popular people, regularly persecuted, even though they were doing the right thing.
What we see in WikiLeaks is a lot of forthtelling, and similar backlash. What is right and what is legal rarely align, and WikiLeaks is no exception. The actions taken by WikiLeaks endangered the lives of US operatives, and also shed light on abuses of power.
While I agree that the law needs to be upheld, I disagree that he did the wrong thing. He definitely did the right thing, but that the US government is right to seek his extradition. I just wish it want such a difficult situation.

Doesn't the religion imply that only God is supposed to be the judge? Please explain which quote from the bible you reference? Where does it say to expose sin?
So you say lives were endangered? Do you think one man or any man should have the authority to endanger the lives of others to express moral sentiments or for a political cause? If you think a man should have this authority then where does this authority receive justification from?

I was referring to Elijah calling out king Ahab for his sins in 1 Kings, amongst others. That's just the first one that comes to mind.
Easy there, tiger. No need to get angry.

Watch this. It explains everything that happened in detail. You will start to realised that the mainstream media intentionally leaves out many details from the story.
Assange presented himself to the Swedish police and was interviewed by them. He was then given permission to leave the country by the Swedish authorities. He never fled the country.
And the list goes on...
