Do you agree that every Development for Steem should be released as Open Source, to receive funds from the Steem Blockchain?
The last publication by @steemchiller about his Funding Proposal for SteemWorld brought a lot of discussion to the Steem table. A few issues were raised and in this post I'd like to address the most pertinent one (in my opinion). And also to make a little Poll about it.
As you can see by some of the comments, @steemchiller is being asked by part of the community to Open Source the application - that is, if he wishes to receive funds from the Steem Blockchain.
Judging how things are going, it seems that releasing the code as Open Source is the only way that @steemchiller's proposal will gain enough support to be funded with 77 SBD per day.
At current prices, this would be $52 per day or $1570 per month. Frankly, this seems perfectly reasonable to me, even more when you think that everyday on this platform there are a few shitty posts which combined gather $1570 easily... not per month, but per day.
So, it seems to me that by refusing this proposal we are implicitly saying that 10 shitty posts are more valuable than a full month of @steemchiller's work on SteemWorld.
If that's the case, why should @steemchiller open source the application at all? If people really don't see enough value in it, maybe the best would be to make it a Freemium app, or even maybe a Closed app available only for subscribers.
I understand the logic for people wishing to see the source code. After all, people like to know exactly what it is that they are funding.
On the other hand, if @steemchiller releases the application to the community, is there any clausule on the SPS that guarantees that he will keep being funded? How do we know that other developers won't simply pick up his code, rename the app, and release it themselves... which then would make the funding of SteemWorld... unecessary?
This concludes the serious part of my post... And now let's have a little fun with the Poll.
Do you agree that every Development for Steem should be released as Open Source, to receive funds from the Steem Blockchain? (Tell me why in the comments.)
- Yes, Everything Must Be Open Source
- No, Closed Source Applications are Just as Valid and Important to Steem
- Undecided, I'm on the Fence and Haven't Made Up My Mind Yet
Answer the question at dpoll.xyz.
I consider to remove my proposal in the coming days. Like I said, it's too much pressure and no guaranteed income, therefore it is not really working for me.
Other than that, to make such a big 'project' open source without any guaranteed rewards for 77 SBD would be insane. I woke up recently and will take different ways now.
Thanks for your great support ;)

I agree there is no guarantee and that is a crazy proposition they're asking.

It sure is. It sounds like someone wants to buy Steemworld's code for just a few peanuts.

Also it's crazy we dont have a decentralized polling option that is available on every interface!
That's the sort of area we need to focus on with open source code.

Yeah, DPoll is really cool but it's mostly for fun. Most Steemians don't even know it exists. 🙃

I don't feeling like fighting with SteemConnect right now.. (Maybe later.)
But I do want to point out that while in some countries, 77 Steem daily might be enough to live on, in the US, it is not. He needs twice that to make it livable here. Saying that, I don't know where steemchiller lives or whether he has another source of income that allows him to work for Steem for less... but his time is valuable.
Making it Open Source is great! But if he's to keep doing the fantastic job he's been doing, he has to be fully funded. It's a full-time job on its own.

I use SteemConnect all the time... what problems are you facing?
Open Source is great but that doesn't mean someone should sell their own code for a few lousy peanuts. As soon as the code is released as Open Source, there's no guarantee that someone won't just make a copy of it, rolling all over @steemchiller's work. 🙄
I've seen that exact thing happen a lot of times...

Agreed with your view there.
Nothing major with SteemConnect, just need to set it up again and feeling too tired to do so.
