Dr. Vashishta Narayan Singh was born on 2nd April 1942 as an Indian mathematician. He was born in the village of Basantpur in Bhojpur district of Bihar. Nowadays he is suffering from mental illness and he lives in Basantpur. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969. He was born in Brahman dynasty.

Dr. Vashishtha Narayan Singh passed matriculation examination in 1962 Bihar. While studying at the Patna Science College, he met Professor Kelly from the US in Patna. Impressed by his talent, Professor Kelly gave him an invitation to do research. In 1963, he went to the University of California for research. In 1969, he received Ph.D. in the University of California. Received His research work on cyclical vector mass theory made him famous in India and the world.

Dr. Vashishtha Narayan Singh was actually blessed with some outstanding DNA in him that had manifested quite early on while he was a teen-aged school boy at Netarhat. From Netarhat to Patna Science College, in 1963, was a natural progression for him but what happened thereafter was something extraordinary. Dr Nagendra Nath, Principal of the college, also a Maths teacher, on getting complaints, one after the other about Vashishtha often disturbing the Maths classes by posing questions somewhat unrelated, summoned him to his office chamber one day. He was given a few difficult questions, much beyond the Intermediate class he was student of, to solve. Not only did he solve them promptly right in front of the Principal but also further showed his skill in solving each of them in ways more than one. Dr Nath was awestruck, stood still for a while in total disbelief for he was face to face with kind of prodigy he had never encountered before

After finishing his studies he briefly came to India for some time, but soon he returned to America. This time he worked as a professor of mathematics in Washington. In 1971, Dr. Vashishtha Narayan Singh returned to India. He worked at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta.

In 1973, he was married to Vandana Rani. In 1974, he began to experience mental tourism. He was treated in Ranchi. They were disappearing for a long time and suddenly they got together. The Bihar government sent them to Vengaluru for treatment. But later the government stopped the treatment expenses. Once again the Bihar government has taken initiative to treat the world famous mathematician. The Assurance Committee of the Legislative Council decided to send Dr Singh to Delhi for treatment in his meeting held in Patna on February 12, 2009. In the light of the committee's decision, Bhojpur district administration sent him to Delhi on Sunday, 12 April 09. Two doctors have also been sent along with him. After the examination in Delhi's Mental Hospital, after consulting the doctors, they will be provided further expenditure. The Health Department says that after consultation in Delhi, if needed, they can be taken abroad. Right now he was living neglected life in his village Basantpur. In the eye of the night, the successful operation of cataract was done in his eyes. Many organizations have offered to adopt Dr. Vashishta. But their mother is not granted this.
