Sasha Velour is the winner of the 9th season of RuPaul's Drag Race, but she is much more than that: avant-garde artist, revolutionary, visionary. Sasha represents "the future of drag," as she herself has said; she is not afraid to break down barriers and stereotypes in the drag world. Her character is not voluptuous and does not focus on female physical attributes as in the case of most drag queens.
In Sasha's case, her artistic looks speak for themselves, the visual she conveys sends a free message for the interpretation of whoever sees it and how it makes them feel. After all, that's what fashion is all about.
Her image, inspired by Nosferatu and influenced in great part by the Club Kids, with her unibrow in the shape of a crown, relies on gestures to convey the most visceral expressions.
Her performances are emotional, and beyond dancing or acrobatics, Sasha uses her body language to bring to the audience all the sensations and meaning of her shows.
Her most famous performance is perhaps her first lipsync battle in the ninth season finale of RuPaul's Drag Race against queen Shea Couleé, performing Whitney Houston's song "So Emotional." In this one, she showed a spectacular reveal by removing her wig at the climax of the song, dropping rose petals over her bald head.
The bald queen
Those who don't know Sasha's story will wonder, "Why doesn't she wear wigs like most drag queens?" She is not the only queen who looks like this, as there are other legendary ones like Ongina, who show off their bare heads with pride. However, Sasha has a very particular motivation: her mother died of cancer, and during her treatment with chemotherapy, she did not feel beautiful because of her hair loss. This inspired Sasha to transform her look and be a bald queen, demonstrating the beauty that women possess, whether they have hair or not.
For the finale of the tenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, Sasha Velour returned to the VH1 stage to present the crown to the new queen, Aquaria, showing us a look that represents Eve with the serpent of Eden and the forbidden apple, with a space touch.
Every day, this wonderful drag queen surprises us with her innovation and elegance. Thanks to her, we know what "the future of drag" looks like.
