In this series of drawings, black ink is painted on top of Topps 1991 baseball cards. The colors and shapes found in the final images shine through from the original photographs underneath the black ink.
この黒インクの絵シリーズは１９９１年のトップス社によるベースボールカードを素材とし、黒いインクを丁寧に塗りかさねる事によって作りあげた。 カードのイメージの下にベースボールカードの色鮮やかな写真がのぞいていて、この作品をいっそう輝かせている。

There is the story of the original card, and the story of the painted card. Sometimes these stories can align, and sometimes they tell different things.
オリジナルのベースボールカードには、その時代や選手にまつわるストーリーがあり、僕がその上に仕上げた黒インクカードにも、それ独自のストーリーがある。 時々 その両方のストーリーがマッチングすることもあるし、全然違うことを語る時もある。

I chose to paint on these cards left over from my youth because I had so many of them, and I wanted to transform them into something else.
青春時代の残り物のベースボールカードを素材にしようと思った訳は、あまりにも膨大な数を持っていたという事と、それを何か全く別の物に変身させてみたかったからだ。

This act of concealing the photo with black ink raises questions. For the artist: how much of the original photo can you show without revealing the image? How little can you show but still say something? For the viewer: How does knowing what you are looking at change how you see it?
写真に黒塗りをするっていう事には、作る側の人間としていくつかの疑問が生じる。どの程度オリジナルの写真を見せてもベースボールカードって事がばれないか。どれだけ、塗りつぶしてしまっても、元はベースボールカードだよって少しはわかってもらえるか。それから、素材を明かす事によって、鑑賞する側の人の観点にどんな影響を与えるのか。。。
