Ikoma: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - Step by step

in drawing •  7 years ago

As promised! Here's the step by step of Ikoma: Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress I posted earlier :D

Step by step

I started off with a sketch

I used blue brush for this one so I'd be able to identify later on which part I've redrawn with clearer lines

Clear lines

To be honest, I practiced drawing the hands first on paper before actually drawing it since I have quite a problem drawing the hands.

Green skin

I used this tone for our Ikoma-kun right here since he is pretty much not human but I usually use this picture to select the skin tone I want to use. I usually use #3 for light skin tone and #10 and #11 for tanner skin tone. Feel free to save it for future use. It saves a lot of work choosing the right skin tone :D

Next, the armor stuff

Blood-ish part

Well, this is where it gets fun. I played with the layer blending mode for this one and ended up with color burn, if I remember it right. It gives off that wound-ish look and I like it :D

Then of course, the background

Started off with the gradient background

Added the ground but I figured it was a little dull, so I added some fire. It was later on covered by the kabanes but that's fine.

Lastly, the kabanes. I basically just copy pasted them after drawing one kabane :> Kinda cheating but it sure makes life easier :D

I adjusted the color since he looked a bit pale and it didn't quite fit the background. I did this using the curves in adjustment tab.

Thank You!

Thanks @tokoya! :D

if the hands are complicated to draw, but they look good !!!!

Thanks @adv-and-ejv! Though I'd avoid drawing the hands if I could since I find it very hard to draw them :>

Really nice post, kothy!!! The step by step really brought the picture's story alive! :D
