The first step to creating a pencil drawing technique is to begin working with a pencil. A sketchpad is probably the best bet as a surface for doing pencil work. Some people may prefer to use a digital tablet or a piece of paper, and for those people, I recommend sketching out the idea for the drawing on paper and transferring the sketch to the digital surface of the sketchpad.
