Drawing #16 - One Piece - Gol D. Roger

in drawing •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit friends:

After I finished my last drawing of Luffy, I took notice of all of the great fan art from One Piece that had been drawn by others on Steemit, but one particular individual I couldn't recall seeing was Gol D. Roger! He is the only man in One Piece who obtained the treasure, One Piece, and left his treasure hidden for another pirate group to find.

There are many things to still be discovered in the anime, and one which particularly piques my interest is, why is this middle name "D." so important? (Please don't tell me if you know! I'm waiting for the anime to reveal its secrets!) Also, what IS the One Piece?

Gol D. Roger is pretty smart too and is able to read and write in the ancient hieroglyphic language that only a few people in the world can read. Honestly, I can't recall anyone other than Robin, the archaeologist who is part of Luffy's pirate group, who can read and write it.

Without further ado, here is my drawing of Gol D. Roger and the drawing process:

Drawing Process:

I started out by doing some general light sketches of his face. In my bad drawing habits, I don't really have a "skeleton" that I start out with. I start off my drawing by "sizing it up" in the page. I tend to ask myself questions and answer them too, sort of. Some questions I ask myself (without actually asking myself) are:

Are the eyes in the center of the page or lower than center? Yep, draw some temporary eyes there. How much page space does his face take up? Most of it. His face looks a little squashed too. How does the size of his nose compare to his eyes? Are they smaller or bigger?

After I get the general sketching done for my drawing, I start cleaning up my lines by making clean solid lines. Even when I am doing my general sketching, I try to do this as much as possible, but I tend to forget and go back to the "sketchy look" with multiple lines.

After I get rid of the sketchiness, I'm dying to ink, because it's my favorite part of the drawing process. When I first started drawing, I kept all of my drawings in pencil and didn't add color, but since I've discovered the world of color, it both terrifies and captivates me; I'm terrified to have those noob accidents where my hand slips and I draw a streak of black diagonally up the page. I love the colors because it makes me think about how to best depict reality (despite having drawn anime characters).

Here, I noticed the skin tone was very uneven, and for whatever reason, it made me think about how women often buy those creams and oils to help even out their skin tone. In Gol D. Roger's case, I used some prisma color pencils and pastels to even out his skin tone. To initially color Gol D. Roger, I used Copic markers.

One lesson I learned with copic markers this time was to leave a little gap between the colors. To explain, when I colored the hair, and then colored the face afterwards with my copic markers, the two colors began blending at the borders and the black started leaking onto the face. In the future, I need to keep in mind to leave a little gap and fill in the gap with another medium. I didn't spend too much time on this drawing only because I am working on drawing many different kinds of drawings rather than sticking to one for longer than a week, which is what I did with Luffy.

LOL at Upbutted hahahaha Sounds uncomfortable.

Nice drawing process coverage. I rember that about the Copic markers. Leaving space for them to bleed is a good tip.

Thanks! It's been a while since I have worked on my drawing since school has started. I definitely still need to work on my control with Copic markers.

This looks great! I see it was from a couple of months ago. You need to keep doing these!

Thanks :) Since school started, it has been difficult to find time to draw. Recently I just finished a 12 hour test which consisted of writing proofs and the like which took up all of my time. I brought my drawing book with me to school though so that I can at least work on something small if I have free time.
