I am one of the people who has experienced this "scary moments" sleep experience.
I have had periods of when I was about to fall asleep, but suddenly I realized that I am falling asleep. So I tried to wake up and move, but couldn't. At that time I closed my eyes, but I am aware of the surrounding as if I have x-ray vision through my eyelids. For example, if my family was in the vicinity, I would know what they are doing.
Since I cannot move, that scared me and I tried to scream. In my mind I was speaking or screaming rather clearly, but I know I was just grunting inaudibly. Why was I screaming? I was trying to make them to wake me up. The paralysis felt like a weight has been put down on my chest.
What about you guys or girls? Have you ever experienced anything like that?
Sleep Paralysis or REM Atonia is something that happens to you every time you sleep. It's to stop us from acting out dreams in our sleep. It can happen on the onset of sleep due to REM rebound. Anyway, it can be scary being paralyzed, but you don't have to be. You are not seeing through your eyes or hearing anything, it is dream imaginary and hallucination. Sure your family were nearby, but you were experiencing half-asleep dream. There are people who spread fear of sleep paralysis and reading their horror stories will in turn put you in a state of fear. However, I can assure you I have experienced sleep paralysis consciously quite a lot and they have never been scary. Just stay calm and try to drift off to sleep. If you must get up then calmly try to move your fingers and you'll break free from it. Your body is doing this for your protection, not to harm you.
