Another recipe from my great-grandmother's kitchen. I never experienced her making it myself, she died when I was too young to drink it because hers contained alcohol, but my grandmother was kind enough to make a virgin version for the grand-kids and non-drinking adults around dinner and let the drinkers add a shot of their own. I asked her for the recipe when I was old enough to be making stuff for myself and she happily gave it to me. It's been one of the best things I bring to parties warm drink wise, and people are always asking what's in it and are surprised at how simple the ingredients are so here goes!
You'll Need The Following;
- 1 box of some kind of cider spice mix
- 6 teaspoons of sugar
- a handful of cinnamon sticks
- 8 cups of water
- a small baggie of soft caramel candies (or make your own if you're so inclined!)
This is literally the easiest things ever. Put your water, spice mix, sugar and cinnamon sticks in a large pot and boil. Then let it boil for about 10 minutes. I highly recommend using cinnamon sticks if you can, as powdered cinnamon doesn't dissolve and will muddy the mix but don't worry if all you have/can afford is powdered.
Pour the mix into cups and add a few caramel candies. Stir until they are dissolved, drink and enjoy! If you want to add a shot of alcohol I suggest whiskey or bourbon, that seems to be the favorite for the holiday drinkers in my family :)
