In an ashram in Varanasi - an oil painting

I still remember the day when I saw this man in an ashram in India. We were wandering around Benares, and saw a monumental gate - on the other side was a lovely garden. Our curiosity got the best of us and we walked in.

We found men dressed like this one who spent their days in mediation and contemplation. Their only possessions were the clothing they wore, their bowls for meals, and a pair of wooden sandals. They had little cells, each equipped with a '"charpoy" (wood bed with woven net for a mattress).

They asked us many questions about how we lived, and were amazed at the price we paid for our airplane tickets. To them it was more money than they had ever seen in their lives.

We went back in the afternoon and took a few photos, and chatted with them some more. They were all gathered around a man who was reading to them. It was a picture of perfect peace.

It is amazing how different cultures have a different approach about what is valuable and what is not. Most of the time, we westerns are so imbued with ourselves that when we realize that there exist realities totally different from ours we get a big surprise. It is still a huge world to see @kathleenscarboro and now we have this wonderful window to get to know a little about it. As always I loved your artwork.

What do you think about them not having earned enough to buy a flight ticket in their lifetime?

Best regards.

Very lovely painting, Kathleen. I love how graceful and serene the painting is, the transpose of multi colours make such beautiful combination and harmony, creating a dreamy atmosphere.

Well done, as always :).

Beautiful!!!

Oh thank you @melooo182.

What is interesting is they sound like early Westerners before the industrial age a bed with tied rope (sleep tight was the term) a few handmade items from which to eat and the clothes on their back. The house and land often not theirs. It's funny that in a way we are all at varying times living the same life but in different times.

Wonderful inspiration for paintings as usual and so much colour and joy in the piece.

Thank you @donnadavisart. Simplicity has its own charm, doesn't it.

Beautiful painting and a wonderful experience, I imagine. I would love to also visit an Ashram someday.

Thank you. It was a lovely experience, which I intend to renew. Perhaps there are ashrams in Austria? We have one in Paris.

Wow your painting reminds me of early twentieth century cubism. It shows the passage of time by layering changing viewpoints.

Thank you. It is always interesting to hear what thoughts people have when looking at a painting.

Hello @mandolincarls, Thank you. I have been painting since I was in my teens. When I was 19 at university, I met my teacher who was a fabulous painter. We remained friends until he passed away. I became a professional artist in 1981.

Really wonderful, @kathleenscarboro! Your colours are always so wonderfully painted, rich and warm <3 That bed is very interesting ! I wonder if it is comfortable :O

Love the painting ! The colours, layering and shadows are done so nicely <3

Actually charpoys are very comfortable; I have often napped on them in the afternoon while in India.

Glad you like the painting.

I was always fascinated with persons taking them selves ''out'' of world this way. Maybe it's because it looks like sf project from my point of view and life positions.
Thank you for sharing this story and your colorful art @kathleenscarboro.

There are many people who do this in India, especially in Varanasi. I go to ashrams myself for a break from running from thought to thought, project to project.

It must be some experience and cleaning of everything that comes as a burden in this world we live.Or it's just my imagination making me think like that..

It is really a liberating experience which I renew regularly. Probably I will go back to India in January.

Lucky you :)
