Phoenix Harm Reduction Program "Shot in the Dark"

in drugs •  7 years ago

"Shot In The Dark is Arizona’s largest syringe access program. It is led entirely by volunteers and aims to address the impact of the opioid epidemic through non-judgemental solidarity and direct services to people who inject drugs in the Phoenix area.

In addition to providing clean syringes to stop the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C, we help people make informed choices about their health. We provide referrals to services like housing, mental health, and drug treatment. We also directly provide overdose prevention kits containing naloxone (Narcan), HIV & Hepatitis C testing, male & female condoms, and wound care kits. We also collect used sharps to help keep our communities safe.

Shot In The Dark is funded completely by community donations. In 2016, we distributed over 500,000 syringes in Maricopa County, while providing hundreds of referrals and over a thousand naloxone kits. In the first six months of 2017, we exceeded all of those numbers while expanding our program to operate every day in all corners of the Phoenix metro area. Shot In The Dark volunteers are unpaid, donating their time and efforts to a cause they believe in deeply.

There are an estimated 77,000 Arizonans currently living with Hepatitis C, most of which is spread through needle sharing. There were almost 1500 drug overdose deaths in our state in 2016 alone. We are at a critical juncture regarding how we deal with the opioid epidemic, and in the absence of any state support, we are calling on our community to help us continue to fund our efforts.
Please help us to continue fighting for those whom everybody else would prefer to ignore.

Thanks to our fiscal sponsor Sonoran Prevention Works, donations are eligible to be tax deductible!

Help spread the word!"

Hepatitis condition is something of great concern, a very contagious disease which spreads through fluids, bodily fluids and all that... Its not a disease to be taken lightly... You are doing great work providing the health care measures you talked about. Very well done to you and "shot in the dark".
