Acoustic Guitar IO - Episode 1 - Will McNicol

in dsound •  7 years ago

Will McNicol is a young fingerstyle guitar player and composer from Dorset in England. He was named Guitarist Magazine's UK Acoustic Guitarist of the Year (2011) and one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine's 30 Great Guitarists Under 30 from around the world (2014).

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the annual RMMGA UK gathering in May 2018 at a beautiful country manor in the Cotswolds. He and I sat down over a cup of tea and talked about his guitars and his new album for half an hour.

Will plays [Fylde guitars](fyldeguitars.com) and teaches and performs at the [Ullapool Guitar Festival](ullapoolguitarfestival.com).

Guitars made from whiskey barrels? Now that's cool! We have a local group that plays a mix of Celtic tunes along with Folk/Americana. They are a family group consisting of a husband and wife and their adult son. They have a wide arrangement of instrumentation including a harp, wooden flute, accordion, banjo, ukelele, mandolin, traditional guitar as well as steel and an awesome custom made cigar box guitar. They even wrote a song specifically for that cigar box guitar. Very cool stuff!

Thank you so much for listening crowbarmama - it really means a lot.

Folk and Americana are among my favourite styles, particularly bluegrass. It's such fun to play and so full of energy!

I have an old banjo that belonged to my best friend's grandfather. She gifted it to me a decade ago and it's been loaned out to friends during that time. However, my friend passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 40, so I've got the banjo back and plan to learn to play it this year.
