İranlı şair Senai’nin anlattığı hikayeye göre bir padişah sırdaşına başkasına anlatmaması şartıyla bir sırrını söyler. Zamanla bu sırrı kimseye söyleyemediği için hastalanan adam, başvurduğu hekimin tavsiyesi üzerine uzaktaki bir göle gider ve sırrı haykırır. Sonraları bu gölün kıyısında biten kamıştan yapılan ney, padişahın sırrını bütün dünyaya ilan eder.
Bu efsane Hz. Ali’ ye de şu şekilde uyarlanmıştır: Hz. Muhammed, Miraç gecesi gördüklerinin etkisiyle içine düşen aşk ateşine dayanamaz ve sırrını Ali’ ye anlatır. Aynı aşk ateşiyle yanmaya başlayan Hz. Ali, sırrı bir kör kuyuya açar. Bir gün peygamber çevresindekilerle gezinirken kulaklarına Hz. Ali’ye anlattığı sırrın sözleri gelir. Kuyunun içinden yükselen bir kamış rüzgarda sallandıkça sırrını söylemektedir.
