I am back with two more fantastic folktales from India. This is 2nd episode of FTT-Fantastic Folktales from India Podcast.
What are folktales Folktales are stories passed down through generations, mainly by oral storytelling. Folktales are of very wide they may be fairy tales (or fairy tales), tall tales, trickster tales, myths, rebel, humor and legends. Folk tales gives us insight into our past in very plain language with punch of fantasy, every story- teller who tell folk add or removes plot or character depending on how he perceives world. In India, Grandmother (grandparents) are major folk tellers who pass their stories to us.
I am sharing two folktales very famous in their respective states one is in translated in English Language and other one is in Hindi
Tale in English Language,
The chain tales : This oral tale was collected and retold by A.K. Ramanujan, an Indian scholar, hails from Karnataka state of South India. This is a dark humor tale about how it is very difficult to rise above the pool of materialism.
Tale in Hindi Language,
Sadhu Ki Seekha ( Learning of a hermit) : This tale was retold by Vijaydan Detha, a, eminent folklorist from India.
This is a tale of humor when peasant test the virtuousness of a saint.
