Baitul Mal berasal dari dua kata bahasa Arab, yakni bayt sebagai mudhaf (kata benda yang disandarkan) dan al-mal sebagai mudhaf ilaihi (kata benda yang menjadi sandaran). Bayt berarti "rumah," sedangkan al-mal berarti “harta,” sehingga baitul mal berarti “rumah harta” secara bahasa.
