Japanese Original Episode Title: がなる風雲急 Roaring Upheaval
Review of My Hero Academia: Roaring Upheaval
Plot
Shoji and Deku went Plus Ultra in saving not only Tokoyami, but even getting to Bakugo and Todoroki! All that’s left was to safely get back to their camp, and they should win! However, the villains didn’t hold back on fulfilling their mission as well, especially because they’ve got grand plans thought out for their target. It’s now or never for both sides!

Episode Highlights
In one fell swoop: I know I’ve said this all too many times before, but I’m just so proud of these kids. First off, Midoriya. His tactical skills played well into helping him save both his friends, and it was just so awesome! I admit that his plan was risky, but they were already in danger, plus it all worked out, right? The rampaging Dark Shadow ended up beating Moonfish to a pulp in such a short time – a dangerous villain whom Bakugo and Todoroki could barely defend against! Two rescue missions in one fell swoop indeed! I’m also glad Bakugo was quickly able to determine that Dark Shadow could finish the job through all the chaos, and with his and Todoroki’s precise judgment, they stopped the rampaging bird from dealing more damage. (The sound Dark Shadow made when he became smaller was so cute! You can really never judge a book by its cover.) Lastly, I couldn’t help but go ‘Awww’ when we found out Tokoyami lost control because his friend got hurt. Shoji couldn’t leave him like that either, nor hold back Midoriya from saving Bakugo, so he was willing to put himself in harm’s way. I love these kids so much!!
Girl talks: Or more like ‘crazy’ girl talks! Toga’s insane! (And I salute her seiyuu, Fukuen Misato, for doing such a good job voicing her.) But, she was also quite skilled for someone only wielding a knife and a blood-sucking machine up against two heroes in training! Plus, even though Uraraka did a good job subduing her, Toga still managed to get the upper hand by appealing to her maiden feelings, distracting her! Well, I guess Toga was fortunate that the students she faced off with were high school girls, one who had a crush ‘like her’. Makes me wonder how she would’ve fared if it were guys instead. Anyway, I hope Uraraka doesn’t let Toga’s sentiments about how she likes someone get to her, because they’re very different! Then again, now they both have a crush on Deku.
Escort mission: Looking at Bakugo’s dumbfounded face was so funny! I already saw multiple memes on it, how he was so confused on why people were trying to protect him! Even if you keep cursing and shouting at them, you are still their classmate, Kacchan. Also, why would they let the villains accomplish their mission, right? Unfortunately, even with their group that can probably stand against All Might, they didn’t take into consideration a sneak attack from a magician! Going by what he’s called and the focus on the marbles he was holding, seems like Bakugo and Tokoyami are inside! Or maybe they became the marbles? It was so frustrating to see Deku and the others looking so distraught and trying everything they could to catch him!
Tying loose ends: How did Kurogiri figure out which teammates needed saving? Will he also try to get the others who were defeated? Maybe he was lurking in the shadows all this time as a backup plan so their vanguard can get back safely, huh? If that’s the case, then they’ve really thought this plan through! But they’re not the only ones who can whip up amazing plans. Aside from Midoriya, Yaoyorozu was still able to think of a backup plan despite being in a terrible state! And thanks to Awase’s bravery and his quirk, they got to sneak in something in that Nomu! Maybe it’s a tracker? Even Aoyama, though it was an accident, could he have heard something that could be helpful in the future?
Themes & Trivia
Familiarity in names: If you’re wondering why Tsuyu was so adamant on not letting Toga call her by her nickname, or why Toga was so excited to call the two by their first names, then you have to know about Japan’s name etiquette. One should add a proper honorific suffix (-san, -sama, -chan, -kun) when addressing a person, normally by their surname. Only close friends are allowed to call someone by their first name; at times, certain people only allow their really close relationships to call them without a suffix at all.

Comments
There are a LOT of things I loved about this episode, but I’m only going to mention a few, like how it showed that brute strength won’t always solve everything. Toga dished out damage with only a knife and some conversation. Mr. Compress accomplished the goal by only being sneaky. And Midoriya was basically incapacitated for most of the episode, yet he was still incredibly helpful! I’m not sure if Horikoshi intended to make this point, but I’m quite impressed either way! I also love that it’s implied they’re going to turn Bakugo and Tokoyami into villains because of their personality and/or quirks. The fact that they’re heroes in training about to get taken down the path of evil is just fascinating to think about, or is it just me? Don’t worry, I don’t want any of them to turn evil!!
They were so close!
Midoriya, Shoji, and Todoroki captured Mr. Compress at the last minute, but it just had to be at the villain’s rendezvous point! We’re at the crucial turning point now, guys! It feels like the last quarter at a basketball game, and the heroes are only one point behind!
