Well, I guess this is the problem when one is very used to the regular social media platforms. I mean, I have YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn for years and years. But these platforms aren't so nice to people who hold different ideas on the world.
Slowly, but surely, I started to look for alternatives. Flote.app looked charming, but died without warning. Telegram is okay, but not as complete as I like. So, I came across LBRY. Blockchain, with its own coin. They mainly started to focus on Odysee, which is a refreshing platform. Quickly bought some LBCs and started my channel on Apologetics. I guess I was one of the first who tackled that subject there because my channel started to grow steadily.
But, I don't like to bet on one horse and found Gab. In the beginning, mostly right-winged folk running and screaming around there, but now it seems that it is balancing out (kinda). Okay, let's do Rumble as well. Rumble didn't mind synchronising my YouTube channel. Just like Odysee and Bitchute. That saves me a lot of time and money (because internet on Madagascar isn't cheap).
Still, not completely happy with the centralised platforms (although LBRY is blockchain, Odysee is not), I looked on. And whatta you know! There is D-Tube!! That sounds good, and I can log in with Steemit. Cool!
But, oh bother, how does it work? I tried to upload one video. I didn't see the video. I tried again… The next day, both attempts were visible. Okay, maybe I can delete one. Nope, can't do. Bother!
Like on Odysee, I uploaded the video with some crypto. That wasn't a good idea because now I was out of DTC and had a kind of soft lock. I couldn't do anything on the channel. I decided to let it rest. I didn't have much time to look into it. Then, last week, I had enough courage again and asked about this on Discord. “Nope, VP is not enough to get enough bandwidth, you need DTC to get started.” Someone, gave me 2 DTC to get started.
Verification sounds good as well. So, I made a short video with my channel name etc. and uploaded it. That did not work because I didn't have enough bandwidth yet. Next day I tried again and fell in the same trap as before. The video didn't show, so I tried again and again…. Well, my Steemit account did it all and posted all attempts.
Not only that! I finally got the video up, assuming that it would be valid for verification… It was not! Why, because they wanted to see my hands or my face. They basically want to see the creator of the video in person. Okay, that was new for me. All the 'HowTo' videos tell me to be creative, but none said it is me they want to see. Maybe, it is the language barrier? I am Dutch, and I assume I miss some nitty-gritty of the English language.
Anyway, I'll try again… When I have built up enough bandwidth to upload. I guess exploring alternatives is not for the faint-hearted. Only the diehards keep on trying (at least that is what I tell myself).
