Dogs Helping with Laundry

in dtube •  6 years ago

My border collies assist with a number of chores around the house. Our youngest dog, Skye Bell, is only 9 months old but has learned to help with laundry by watching Molly (12) and Shawnee (10) do their chores. Skye is intended to become fully trained as a service dog to replace Molly, who is already retired from international travel.

Good dogs! That’s amazing! I can see how that would save you from a whole lot of bending and reaching.

Yeah, I can manage a load alone now if I really have to, but when I first trained Molly trying to empty the washer would leave me in tears and sometimes on the floor as I fell more easily then. Luckily my hip is some improved now, but this lets me cope a lot better. They'll also take laundry out of basket and hand it to me as I hang it up if needed and pick up any clothespins or objects I drop.

Well you are clearly an excellent trainer! And they are beautiful. They seem so eager, and so pleased to help! I’m sure it’s only partly about the treats. 😁

I only use that much treats because it's new behavior for Skye. The others will empty the entire machine for one. Shawnee you have to monitor while filling the machine, because she will try to sneak in and pull out the dirty laundry to "help." Sometimes I've started loading it, realized it wouldn't be full and gone to recheck hampers, etc., for more to throw in and come back to a neat pile of laundry on the floor and Shawnee handing it to me.
