Today on 2 Minutes with the Farmer we are going to show you the process from start to finish on how we grow our own chickens here on the farm. We have been trying to be more self sustaining and part of that is growing all our own meat. We eat a lot of chicken as a family so that means we need a good healthy supply of chicken. Hope you enjoy this video on how we DIY Chicken on the Farm!!!
Thank you for spending 2 minutes with me!

Do you kill the male chicks?
I think some of the big professional farms use carbon monoxide bubbles to suffocate the chickens.
How much do you sell your chickens for? I was surprised how professional your setup was.

We buy straight run chicks so both male and female. We butcher both. We do not sell any. It is illegal to sell them off the farm in KY. Between my family, my sisters family and parents we eat them all.

That's weird. I thought you guys were more freedom loving down there especially with Thomas Massie in Congress and Rand Paul in the Senate. I have a relative down there that was selling eggs. I'm not sure if they sold the chickens though.

Unfortunately there are a lot of restrictive agricultural laws here in KY.

We have not butchered chickens for quite a few years. It used to be a regular thing. Been thinking about starting again. The quality of food is not even in the same league

Nice setup! We are getting our plucker this weekend. Scalder vs. a pot of water on a burner....pros? Cons? I've debated getting one simply for convenience, but not sure if it's worth it. I noticed in your other comment about selling them. Arkansas (where we are) is the strictest state, but next is Kentucky and the difference is you guys can have a mobile processor come to you and process them in order to sell. Not sure how much that runs, but it's a thought.

We used to sell meat retail. Was just one big headache and not worth the little money we made. Now we just raise meet for our family and friends to eat.
The scalder is very convenient. Keeps a very constant temp which is nice.

Awesome video! I love how you raise all of your own chicken and I appreciate you showing everyone all of the steps involved. Do you have separate broilers and layers? or do you just raise them for meat?

We raise those just for meat. We have separate layers for eggs. Thanks for watching!!

I as well enjoy knowing where my food comes from. Have not done chickens yet, going to have to move in order to do that!
